Nasario Gutierrez

Major: Fine Arts Practice, BFA

I foresee a meaningful name, an original name that has letters that could morph into different shapes and fragments. In my mind, I visualize geometric characteristics like flatness and angles then proceed to create my design of Wildstyle graffiti. My subject matter is the names of loved ones and words impactful to me.

My artwork is rooted in graffiti and is an expression of frustration, confusion, and at the same time, enjoyment. In my work, I use the aesthetics and lessons of the urban streets and incorporate it with my academic studies. The work I have done has jumped from graffiti writing with markers on paper to creating sculptural designs painted with a spray can. The process of transforming a 2-dimensional drawing of text to a 3-dimensional graffiti sculpture made of foam is done to give the graffiti letters a pulse. The foam used for the sculpture allows me to emulate the geometric characteristics of the design and the dynamism of the text’s meaning.
