The 2021 Black Box Exhibition, the annual digital media based art exhibition by CSU East Bay students, and alumni. Selected students and their projects are eligible to receive an award or scholarship and will automatically be entered into our next show, the Rising Exhibition.

Our guest juror this year is Damon Packwood, co-founder and executive director of Gameheads Oakland, a youth program at United Roots’ Youth Impact Hub whose goal is to prepare youth (ages 15-24) for a career in the video game industry. The intention of the Gameheads program is to address the knowledge divide but to do so in a way that is focused on one arm of the tech field: electronic entertainment. Participants of Gameheads will learn how to create, code and design games, building skills across a variety of disciplines from visual art, creative writing, design, programming, sound design, animation, game theory and history.

Since 2014 this digital media based art show has served as an avenue for undergraduate and graduate students to have a space to exhibit and showcase their student projects. The original title of the annual Black Box Exhibition was “In the Dark”, termed due to the necessity of a dark gallery space for proper viewing of screen and light based projects and artwork. Many of us have metaphorically felt like we have been “in the dark” during quarantine, but it is now time to let our light shine and let us not forget what Mahatma Gandhi once said,

“In the midst of darkness, light persists”.

This year has been a challenging year for many but mostly a year of reflecting on the past, focusing on the present, and looking towards the future so don’t forget what the great Bob Ross once said,

“Put light against light-you have nothing. Put dark against dark-you have nothing. It is the contrast of light and dark that give the other one meaning.”

On that note, let’s watch some videos. Let’s unify, come together(virtually), and give each other meaning. Thank you for visiting our virtual exhibition.

Fall 2020
Faculty & Staff Exhibition

Making & Seeing during Covid-19

Each year, the University Art Gallery hosts an exhibition of work by current faculty and staff at Cal State East Bay and this year is no different… except of course that everything about 2020 is completely different. The works in this exhibition all in one way or another address the pandemic that is shaping and reshaping all aspects of our lives - our habits, our circumstances, our bodies, our networks. Covid-19 has exposed many vulnerabilities for us as individuals and collectively as a global society. And yet, we persist through this difficult year, finding comfort in those close to us, drawing upon our own inner strengths, and reaching out to connect virtually. Through the artworks in this exhibition we see how art is a tool for coping with difficulty and change, whether it demands that we look more closely at our reality or provides us an opportunity to temporarily escape from it.
This virtual exhibition is divided into three rooms, each with its own theme. As you visit the rooms, you’re invited to also learn more about the artists and works in the show. On several dates during the exhibition, the University Art Gallery will be hosting panel discussions between participating artists and faculty moderators (click the image above for details).

BLACK BOX Exhibition

Cal State East Bay’s University Art Gallery is proud to announce the annual Black Box Show. This is a media based exhibition that showcases current media based works that require little to no lighting, and self illuminated artwork by CSUEB undergraduate students, graduate students, and alumni. This show will feature digital/analogue work, audio (sound art), animation, websites, interactive works, motion graphics, combination installation/video, and mixed media works.

2020 RISING: Annual Juried Exhibition

As one of the competitive and longest-running traditions in the Art Department at Cal State East Bay, the annual “Rising” Juried Student Art Exhibition plays a critical role in recognizing the artistic talents of students and in fostering our creative community in the Bay Area. This special online exhibition features all selected works from a variety of media created by emerging artists at CSUEB. The juror this year is Patricia Cariño Valdez, an independent curator and project manager at the Oakland Museum of California.

For over three decades this exhibition has been supporting promising art students at Cal State East Bay through art scholarship and/or art awards. It is made possible through the support of Friends of the Arts of CSUEB, Hayward Arts Council, San Leandro Arts Association, Artist John Toki of the Toki Award, and the Howard Slatoff Foundation.
